Pretty<\/b><\/p>\n

You look pretty here among the
\nchirping lights. You remind me of an
\nex-girlfriend I’m still friends with.<\/p>\n

Each person in this place walks around
\nin an invisible cage. How you doin’
\nthere, boss,<\/i> says one, nodding.<\/p>\n

I squint at him not unknowingly,
\nremembering that I am someone’s guest.
\nYou lift your special glass moonward,<\/p>\n

smiling like the girl you are, saying
\nsomething simple and audible, like
\nAre we there yet?<\/i> but not that.<\/p>\n

But I know that you were born on a farm,
\nthough you do not know that I know that.
\nYou still have nettles in your socks,<\/p>\n

I imagine, and nothing you say
\nwill surprise me. And there is something
\nmagical in the way you carry yourself,<\/p>\n

as though nothing at all could stop you.
\nYour rings, so many of them, lined
\nalong white fingers — the visible<\/p>\n

strap of your brassiere, the craven
\naliveness of your eyes. Everything
\nhappens in time,<\/i> you say, swaying.<\/p>\n

I respond, But it’s not time that gets me,
\nand it’s not everything I’m thinking
\nabout. It’s one particular thing,<\/p>\n

and it’s fleetingness I worry about.<\/i>
\nYou shudder like a baby eating a lemon.
\nYou look at me lovingly, though.<\/p>\n
