\nA Dead Rose<\/b><\/p>\n

O Rose! who dares to name thee?
\nNo longer roseate now, nor soft, nor sweet;
\nBut pale, and hard, and dry, as stubble-wheat,—
\nKept seven years in a drawer—thy titles shame thee.<\/p>\n

The breeze that used to blow thee
\nBetween the hedgerow thorns, and take away
\nAn odour up the lane to last all day,—
\nIf breathing now,—unsweetened would forego thee.<\/p>\n

The sun that used to smite thee,
\nAnd mix his glory in thy gorgeous urn,
\nTill beam appeared to bloom, and flower to burn,—
\nIf shining now,—with not a hue would light thee.<\/p>\n

The dew that used to wet thee,
\nAnd, white first, grow incarnadined, because
\nIt lay upon thee where the crimson was,—
\nIf dropping now,—would darken where it met thee.<\/p>\n

The fly that lit upon thee,
\nTo stretch the tendrils of its tiny feet,
\nAlong thy leaf’s pure edges, after heat,—
\nIf lighting now,—would coldly overrun thee.<\/p>\n

The bee that once did suck thee,
\nAnd build thy perfumed ambers up his hive,
\nAnd swoon in thee for joy, till scarce alive,—
\nIf passing now,—would blindly overlook thee.<\/p>\n

The heart doth recognise thee,
\nAlone, alone! The heart doth smell thee sweet,
\nDoth view thee fair, doth judge thee most complete,—
\nThough seeing now those changes that disguise thee.<\/p>\n

Yes, and the heart doth owe thee
\nMore love, dead rose! than to such roses bold
\nAs Julia wears at dances, smiling cold!—
\nLie still upon this heart—which breaks below thee!<\/p>\n
