\nLife Is Like a Package<\/b><\/p>\n

Life is like a package that arrives in the mail:
\na present for your sister.<\/p>\n

Unable to open it, you squeeze it,
\nmassage its shape with your fingers.<\/p>\n

At first it feels like a squirt gun.
\nThen it bears resemblance to a miniature loom.<\/p>\n

Unable to determine what it is, you set it
\non the stove where your sister will be sure to see it.<\/p>\n

Then you see that it’s for you, not your sister.
\nYou and she have similar names: unfortunate.<\/p>\n

As soon as you realize this, you are frozen:
\nhands stuck to hips, sneakers fixed on linoleum.<\/p>\n

Life is like the moment you freeze,
\ndozens of thoughts flying through your head.<\/p>\n

The knife is on the table.
\nThe ceiling fan has stopped, too.<\/p>\n

Suddenly your sister walks in from work,
\npicks up the package, disappears into the living room.<\/p>\n

You hear the sound of paper tearing, a tiny chuckle —
\nand then a bloodcurdling scream, then nothing.<\/p>\n

Life is the experience of waiting as night sets in,
\nwatching the starlight glide in through the windows,<\/p>\n

wondering what became of your sister,
\nbut being relieved you didn’t open the package.<\/p>\n
