Lips and tongue learn<br \/>\n        in this oldest, truest way.<br \/>\n        The fruit is round and radiant.<br \/>\n        The firm weight of it feels<br \/>\n        like power.  Shreds of flesh catch<br \/>\n        in her teeth, and as she eats<br \/>\n        she knows it is good.<\/p>\n<p>        He needs no serpent to tempt him.<br \/>\n        He just wants what she has, just as she wants him<br \/>\n        to want what she holds in her hands.<br \/>\n        They share it, then toss the core into a bush,<br \/>\n        knowing that this is the beginning of death,<br \/>\n        the first and best blessing.<\/p>\n<p>        And with the original chill of delight<br \/>\n        and shame, she is on the lam,<br \/>\n        running through brambles, plum boughs,<br \/>\n        and luminous webs, past low-slung branches,<br \/>\n        past the birds of the air and beasts of the field,<br \/>\n        over the rocky soil, stumbling out<br \/>\n        of the garden, out of the numb perfection<br \/>\n        of before into the brilliant and difficult ever-after.<br \/>\n        She is running and running, she feels<br \/>\n        the warm rub of her blood-slicked thighs<br \/>\n        and a thudding, which is her heart.  He is close<br \/>\n        behind her, clutching the pain in his side.<br \/>\n        They take hold of one another<br \/>\n        in their wonder and woe,<br \/>\n        and we call out to them<br \/>\n        from our place in the future,<br \/>\n        this moment, now.
